That attempts to reason like a human would, using logic to extract information from a set of inputted information, known as a knowledge base. A knowledge-based system is an expert system database with an inference engine that is able to apply reasoning to reach a decision.
For the CISSP examination, you should remember that the expert system is like a human and uses reasoning. And knowledge based systems have inference engine which allows them to make inferences. Artificial neural networks or ANNs will attempt to mimic the human brain, using chained units that react like neurons would.
